Vacations are an excellent way to recharge and de-stress, but oftentimes, being a jetsetter involves having an overindulgent attitude, leading to the complete abandonment of good and healthy habits. In fact, research has shown that those who take one to three week vacations can pack on as much as seven pounds while they are off traipsing the globe. Of course, everyone should enjoy their vacations, but this does not mean you need to take a permanent souvenir of flab back home with you once it is over.
Here are some tips to help ensure the only extra baggage you bring back is luggage:
- Control Your Breakfast: No one wants to have to restrict what they eat at every meal while on vacation, especially when the opportunity to try new things is available. Instead, try setting the tone for your day by being mindful of what you eat for breakfast. You should also try to control your snacks and portion sizes. If you know breakfast or brunch might be decadent, have a light snack beforehand, such as some berries. This will take the edge off of your hunger and help you avoid kicking off your day with a heavy meal.
- Be a Smart Snacker: Going on an all-day excursion without snacks is a major mistake. You will end up getting hungry and, if healthy options are not available, you will end up eating foods you normally would not touch. Try to pack healthy snacks with you, such as a piece of fruit, Greek yogurt, a cheese stick, and 10 to 15 raw nuts. No matter where you are staying, there is likely to be a grocery store somewhere near, so buy enough to pack snacks for the duration of your trip.
- Bypass the Buffet: Buffets are always tempting. Not only do they offer a wide variety of foods, but the supply is endless, presenting a better value that we are naturally drawn to. Unfortunately, this better value makes it incredibly easy to overdo it in portion sizes and many often eat way past the point of fullness. Never eat a buffet unless it is your only choice. If you have to stick to the buffet, choose healthy options, such as veggies, lean proteins, and never feel obligated to eat everything in sight.
- Take a Detour: Oftentimes, being on vacation involves a lot of exploring on foot, but if your vacation does not present many chances to use your legs, create them. Walk to dinner, jog to a museum, or for a swim in the ocean instead of just reading on the beach. Move as much as you can, whenever you can.
